Integrated Record & Information System for Individualized Education Programs
IRIS IEP is a complete special education platform purpose-built for Washington's 295 districts and 150,000+ students with disabilities. Native ESHB 2557 compliance, 504 plans, MTSS, a 10-language family portal, and optional AI integration — designed around WAC 392-172A from the first line of code.
Built on a modern architecture designed for rapid customization. New requirements from OSPI, legislative changes, or state-specific needs can be built and deployed in days — not quarters. No legacy debt, no version migrations, no waiting on a national vendor's roadmap.

Washington's special education educators manage IEPs across disconnected tools built 15-20 years ago. Students who transfer between districts lose continuity. Compliance tracking requires manual workarounds. Families face language barriers and opaque processes. Platforms designed for a national market treat Washington's specific requirements as an afterthought.
IRIS IEP was engineered from scratch to address these gaps.
What's built, tested, and ready — not a roadmap
Optional AI capabilities for goal drafting, present level summaries, accommodation suggestions, UDL strategies, and progress notes. Controlled by granular permission sets — districts choose who gets access and how much. Every call runs through PII sanitization, and every output requires human review before saving. The platform is fully functional without AI enabled.
Built from day one for HB 2557: 25-day referral timelines, 40-day evaluation windows, 5-day review periods, waiver-at-consent workflows, and procedural violation tracking in an append-only audit table. This is not a retrofit — the data model was designed around these requirements.
14 process event types (referral, evaluation, IEP review, amendment, and more) drive the entire workflow. Deadlines are calculated from school calendars, not hardcoded. Forms are provisioned per event type. This is a fundamentally different architecture from form-based systems built 15-20 years ago.
272 database tables, 333 API endpoints. IEP, Section 504, MTSS/RTI, FBA/BIP, discipline, transportation, ESY, graduation planning, surrogate parents, data retention, compensatory services, and 15+ additional modules. Parent portal and document translation are included — not paid extras.
Purpose-built for Washington: 6 transfer types, statewide SSID lookup, contact snapshots preserved at transfer time, secure document links with download limits, and communication logging. No other system offers native inter-district IEP transfer across all 295 WA districts.
Mobile-first parent portal with magic-link authentication (no passwords to manage), electronic consent signing, document timeline, meeting RSVP with .ics calendar links, and translated form titles. Supports English, Spanish, Arabic, Somali, Ukrainian, Chinese, Russian, Tagalog, Vietnamese, and Korean. Included at no additional cost.
Hierarchical permission scopes from individual caseload through statewide access. Districts control exactly which features, modules, and AI capabilities each role can access. AES-256-GCM encryption on all PII fields. Every student record access logged to a FERPA audit trail (209+ action types). Append-only audit tables. Rate limiting, progressive lockout, concurrent session enforcement.
Full CAST Universal Design for Learning 3.0 framework embedded in the platform: 3 principles, 9 guidelines, and 36 checkpoints linked directly to goal templates and accommodation libraries. General education teachers can see UDL strategies tailored to the students in their classroom — bridging the gap between IEP compliance and daily instructional practice.
Next.js 15, React 19, PostgreSQL, tRPC, AWS ECS Fargate. A modern architecture that enables real-time compliance alerts, AI integration, and rapid feature development. New capabilities ship in days, not quarters. No technical debt from two decades of acquisitions and version migrations.
Every form, timeline, and compliance rule reflects WAC 392-172A. School-day deadline calculations via district calendar integration. CEDARS pre-validation to catch data issues before SIS submission. WSIPC/Skyward SIS integration. This system was not built for a national market and adapted for Washington — it was built for Washington.
Other platforms charge separately for parent portals, translation services, and module add-ons — costs that surface after contract signing. IRIS IEP includes every module, every feature, and every integration in the base platform.

From OSPI leadership to the families the system ultimately serves
Real-time statewide compliance visibility, CEDARS pre-validation, aggregated outcome reporting, and standardized data collection. No more waiting for district-by-district submissions.
District-wide compliance dashboards, caseload distribution, audit-ready records, and state reporting — in a single system. No separate tools to reconcile.
AI-assisted goal writing from a bank of 1,530+ templates, guided IEP workflows, automated deadline tracking, and compliance alerts. Less time on paperwork, more time on instruction.
View students with IEPs and 504 plans by class period. See full IEPs, accommodations, and modifications at a glance. Built-in UDL framework with strategies tailored to each student and whole-class recommendations that benefit all learners.
Caseload dashboards, automated deadline tracking, bulk reassignment, team coordination, and compliance alerts. Assignment history with 7 reason types and full audit trail.
Secure portal with magic-link auth, electronic consent signing, document timeline, meeting RSVP with calendar links, and progress updates — in 10 languages, on any device.

Not a national product adapted for WA. Every form, timeline, and compliance rule reflects WAC 392-172A and ESHB 2557. The architecture was designed around Washington’s regulatory environment, not retrofitted to accommodate it.
Optional AI integration with 10 feature types, PII sanitization, human review checkpoints, and HIPAA BAA coverage. Controlled through the same granular permission system as every other feature — districts decide if, when, and for whom AI is enabled. No other platform offers AI with this level of governance.
Built in 2025 on a modern stack. New requirements from OSPI, legislative changes, or district-specific needs can be implemented and deployed in days. Systems built on 15-20 year old architectures cannot iterate at this pace.
Parent portal, 504 plans, MTSS, document translation, and inter-district transfers are all included in the base platform. AI capabilities are available as an optional tier. Other platforms charge separately for parent portals, translation, and module add-ons — costs that surface after contract signing.
333 API endpoints, 272 database tables, 227 permissions, 1,530+ goal templates. This is a fully built system ready for Washington districts — not a prototype or a roadmap commitment.
Append-only audit tables, FERPA access logging on every student record view, AES-256-GCM encryption on PII, and rate limiting at every layer. The system was designed for due process hearings — the PDF in the file matches what the parent saw on screen.
IRIS IEP is a complete system — not a concept, not a roadmap. We welcome technical evaluation, compliance review, and direct comparison against any incumbent platform.
